Residents operating commercial trucks and tractors on Florida's roadways must register those vehicles in the State of Florida.

Non-residents must register their vehicles in Florida if they engage in a trade or occupation or are employed in Florida or their children attend public schools in Florida.

Vehicle registrations for commercial trucks and tractors may be obtained at one of the Tax Collector's Offices.

To receive a vehicle registration for a commercial truck and/or tractor  the following items are required:
  • A registration renewal notice or previously issued registration. (If these are not available the tag number, title number or vehicle identification number may provide enough information.)

  • Also required on motorized vehicles with four wheels, current proof of Florida property damage liability and personal injury protection insurance, including the insurance company's name and policy number.

  • For commercial trucks and tractors with a declared gross vehicle weight of 26,001 pounds or more, proof of insurance:

    35,000-43,999 $100,000 per occurrence
    44,000-80,000 $300,000 per occurrence

    Acceptable forms of proof are as follows -

    • Form E, Uniform Motor Carrier Bodily Injury & Property Damage Liability;

    • Proof of self insurance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration;

    • Policy which provides the required coverage;

    • Insurance policy binder which provides the required coverage;

    • Certificate of insurance issued on insurance form only (must reflect policy number and levels of insurance coverage); or,

    • Depositing a surety bond with HSMV issued by a surety company authorized to do business in Florida or a combination of a surety bond and insurance policy which satisfies the requirements of section 320.02(5)(e), Florida Statutes.
Note: An insurance affidavit is not acceptable proof of commercial vehicle insurance.

All proofs of insurance must contain the following endorsement: "As provided for in Section 320.02(5)(e), Florida Statutes, the listed insurance policy(s) or surety bond(s) may not be canceled on less than 30 days written notice by the insurer to the Department of Highway Safety & Motor Vehicles, such 30 days notice to commence from the date notice is received by the Department."

If you fail to renew your commercial trucks and tractors tag and registration before the 11th day of the month following its expiration, a penalty fee will be charged upon late renewal.  Also, it is a violation of the law to operate a vehicle on Florida's roadways without a current registration and license plate.

Please note that Florida law does not provide for vehicle registration renewal notices and failure to receive a renewal notice by mail does not relieve the vehicle owner of the their responsibility to timely renew their vehicle registration and license plate.

The Tax Collector does, however, provide renewal notices as a courtesy to resident vehicle owners. The courtesy renewal notices are mailed approximately 3 weeks prior to the birth month or month in which the renewal is due.

The cost of renewing a registration and tag varies according to the gross vehicle weight commercial truck or tractor, as well as the type of tag chosen to be displayed on the vehicle.

Vehicle registration and tag renewals may be conducted at one of the Tax Collector's Offices.
